The film starts with Ben Affleck, resplendent with stubble and weary eye bags, is a rich but bored husband with a beautiful but also bored wife, rattling around in a giant house wondering what to do with himself. Soon enough, a dead body appears. That’s the premise of Deep Water, a sultry new thriller starring Affleck and Ana de Armas as his wayward partner.

Vic Van Allen and his wife Melinda, are deep in the misery of a failed partnership. They ae living together seemingly for their daughter Trixie but there seems to be little love that remains between the couple.
The first extended scene takes place at a party, where Melinda gets very drunk and flirts with a handsome young man she personally invited to the party. In a moment alone together, Vic tells the new boy that he killed Melinda’s last lover, who’s now missing.
Is he kidding? Melinda cheats, and it’s possible that Vic kills the guys with whom Melinda cheats. Melinda uses men for pleasure and to provoke her husband.
She says at one point that she does so because of the way they make her feel. These are selfish creatures, two people who give into basic instincts in ways that most moral people repress.
Why doesn’t Melinda divorce Vic? The answer lies not in the film but in its source material. Deep Water has been adapted from the Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name. Highsmith pitilessly explores the numerous layers of a co-dependent relationship and lays bare the masochistic misery that keeps Vic and Melinda together.
