Film Solitary Overview

In the first few scenes, Issac is chased by the cops. He then realizes that he’s in a space pod with only Alana, his only companion. He’s been sentenced to life on Earth’s first colony in space, though he can’t remember his trial or sentence, and he can’t find his way back to Earth.

Armstrong’s effects credits include Guardians of the Galaxy, Annihilation, and The Witcher and it shows. Solitary opens with some excellent shots of a futuristic London.

Unfortunately, none of those stunning buildings or flying cars are visible during the scenes with Issac. Whether that was because of the budget or the COVID interrupted post-production I’m not sure. But it’s the film’s only real misstep when it comes to the effects.

Throughout the movie, Havelock and Alana work with ground control to return to Earth. But it soon becomes obvious that ground control was never trying to rescue them, but was trying to ensure that the prisoners remain in space until they expire.

Though we all saw it coming, I actually liked this aspect of solitary. And I thought ending the movie just before we find out Havelock’s final fate was a nice touch. But this moment would have been better if Solitary wasn’t bogged down with unnecessary plot points and terrible action.
