Demon’s Souls is an action role-playing game in which players attempt to save a medieval kingdom from a demonic curse. Players explore ruins, castles, and caverns while battling fantasy creatures (e.g., demonic creatures, dragons) in frenetic melee/ranged combat.
Violence is inflicted using a variety of weapons, such as swords, with which human and demonic characters may be beaten and slashed.
Impacts result in the insight of blood and injury detail, with corpses seen lying on the ground afterward. Sometimes characters groan in pain when hit.
Fireballs can be thrown at humans, causing them to burst into flames and fall to the ground. In one cinematic scene, a human-like character is impaled on the blade of a sword and is hoisted into the air.
Gurgling sounds are heard as the character is lifted up and they bleed out.
Players use swords, spears, arrows, and magic to kill enemies; some weapons allow players to perform finishing moves that depict impaling and/or stabbing, with occasional slow-motion effects.
Combat is accompanied by cries of pain and large blood-splatter effects.
One sequence depicts animal corpses strewn around a cave, with visible entrails.
Cutscenes also depict violence and blood: a ghoul impaled by a falling gate; a demon impaled by a lance.

Demon’s Souls Gameplay

The game features new weapons, armor, rings, and items called “Grains” which give players a temporary resistance to effects like poison, fire, and bleeding. As with the original, players are limited in how much they can carry before their character becomes encumbered, although some aspects of this encumbrance system have been adjusted.

For example, in the original game, healing grasses have no weight, so players could potentially carry hundreds of them; in the remake, these healing items now have a weight associated with them so that the amount players can carry is significantly lessened, and more potent grasses weigh more than less effective ones.

One new feature, called “Fractured World”, is a mirror mode that reverses the layout of environments. The game also includes a photo mode, whereupon using it the game will pause, something not possible in the original. Filters from the photo mode can also be used during gameplay, including a “classic mode” filter intended to evoke the look of the original PlayStation 3 game.

Although the Souls series is notorious for its difficulty, Bluepoint stated that the remake would not introduce different difficulty levels. The character creation feature has also been updated, with more options for customization.
