A Shadowhunters novel, Chain of Gold, is the first novel in a brand-new trilogy. It is a young adult urban fantasy novel by Cassandra Clare. Chain of Gold is the first book in The Last Hours but chronologically it is second in The Shadowhunter Chronicles and involves James and Lucie, the children of Tess and Will from that series.

Like all Shadowhunter novels, there are demons to fight.

There was an event that occurs in the London area in 1903 The book follows the same, focusing on the residents of the London Institute. Like in The Infernal Devices, the chapter titles are all taken from the book’s from the Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations.

Chain of Gold Parents Guide

There are teens, lesbians, gay some bisexual characters who are kissed briefly.
A female character seduces men and women.
Use of profanity, words such as bloody, damn, hell and ba**ard are the most common.
Sexual content includes adults kissing and undressing and a character with many lovers.
Shadowhunters fight demons many times with blades flashing and ichor flowing before the demons disappear in a puff of ash but demons have poison that slowly kills one Shadowhunter and nearly kills others.
There is a description of a rotting body that had been ripped apart by demons.
A ghost remembers his own death as a teen. A near-death from drowning, a broken leg, a dangerous fever.
Characters are possessed and manipulated by demons.
Heavy drinking from one teen character and he confronted that he is an alcoholic more than once with talk of another character being an alcoholic.
Some teen characters and adults drink brandy, wine, Port, and champagne regularly. One character smokes cheroot.
 Teen Shadowhunters drink in the company of friends.

Chain of Gold Summary

In the battles before disappearing in a cloud of ash demons poisoned Shadowhunters. One Shadowhunter dies due to poison and others are severely injured. There is a description of a rotting body that had been ripped apart by demons, a near-death from drowning, and possession and manipulation by demons.

A Shadowhunter, Cordelia Carstairs a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. Cordelia Carstairs and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin as her father is accused of a terrible crime. Cordelia’s mother wants her to get married but rather than a bride Cordelia is determined to be a hero.

Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians.

All the while, she must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else. But Cordelia’s new life is blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London. These monsters are nothing like those Shadowhunters have fought before—these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill. London is immediately quarantined.
