She soon realized that she can only be with him if she leaves this life and becomes a human. In order to turn into a human, she visited a wicked Cassandra. Cassandra in return for her voice made her a human. 

This transformation comes with a condition that if Stefan marries someone else, then Lena will turn into a sea-from for the rest of her life.
